What are Urban Sketchers and Urban Sketchers Twin Cities?

Urban Sketchers is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Founded in 2007, the mission of Urban Sketchers is to raise the artistic, storytelling, and educational value of on-location drawing, promoting its practice and connecting people worldwide who draw on location where they live and travel.

Urban Sketchers Twin Cities is a local chapter of Urban Sketchers. Established in 2009, the Twin Cities chapter hosts several sketch outings each month. We are one of over 500 global chapters! Find out more and join us at urbansketchers-twincities.blogspot.com/ or on Facebook.

What is Watermark?

Watermark is an urban sketching event hosted by Urban Skechers Twin Cities. The goal of the event is to celebrate and practice the art of on-location sketching in the Twin Cities. Each Watermark event (this is the first!) offers valuable field-sketching instruction and opportunities for participants to meet new friends and learn more skills. Following the Urban Sketchers’ spirit of “sharing the world, one drawing at a time,” we aim to make Watermark and annual event showcasing our beautiful cities.

Who can participate?

Watermark is open to registered participants who have an interest in drawing on location, no matter their skill level or background.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

There are no ID or minimum age requirements. Lecture and artist demonstration content will be aimed at adult sketchers and learners. Please use your discretion if attending with youth. All youth attendees must be accompanied by an adult that is registered for the event.

What is the programming? Who are the instructors?

Watermark will feature a lecture and artist demonstration by globally renowned urban sketcher Jenny Jing Zhang as well as demonstrations by members of the Urban Sketchers Twin Cities chapter—Bill Beaupre, Jinjer Markley, Pam Enz, and Sarah Harris.

Participants will have many opportunities to learn and socialize with other attendees throughout the event.

Do I have to register? How much does it cost?

This event is free for registered attendees. Registration is required.

If you enjoy the event (and we think you will!) we would appreciate your support to make future events like this possible. You will have an opportunity to donate on Eventbrite when you register as well as at the event. Ask one of the organizers or event volunteers for more information.

Can I buy a pass for someone else?

Preferably, no. However if it is necessary, please provide information at registration, specifically of the person attending the event. Passes are non-transferable. So, please ensure that the information provided is accurate.

Where do I sign up to be on the Wait List? 

There is not a Wait List. Participants can release their ticket back to Eventbrite, which would then be open to the public. Event coordinators will periodically send reminders if tickets are still available.

What is the date of the event? What time does it start?

Friday, September 25th at 6pm through Saturday, September 26th.

What’s the address of the event entrance?

Friday evening activities will be held at the A-Mill Artist lofts at 315 SE Main St, Minneapolis, MN 55414.

Saturday will be a sketchwalk and demos with the group moving locations several times through the day. Meet Saturday morning at 9am outside the Guthrie Theatre on the corner of Chicago Ave. and S. 2nd Street.

Where should I park?

Metered street parking is available throughout the neighborhood.

Paid parking ramps are also available.

Is there public transportation available?

Yes! There are several Metrotransit bus lines that run within a block or two of Watermark venues. The Light Rail runs within a few blocks of the Mill District on Saturday. Check https://www.metrotransit.org for more information.

Do I need to bring any special equipment? What should I bring/not bring?

Bring your favorite sketching gear! A small stool could be useful on Saturday. Please dress for the weather.

Is food provided? If so, are there accommodations for dietary restrictions?

Friday: Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided.

Saturday: We encourage attendees to enjoy breakfast at the Mill City Farmers Market, which opens at 8 am. Or stop by Farmers Kitchen + Bar or FRGMNT- Mill District for a coffee and pastry before the day starts. Join other attendees at many of our local lunch options or pack a picnic lunch to enjoy along the river or in Gold Medal Park.

Saturday socializing: Please join us for a casual drink and draw after the throwdown at Crooked Pint Ale House. Drinks and snacks available for purchase.

Is the venue wheelchair accessible?

The A-Mill Artist Lofts are wheelchair accessible. All other events take place outdoors on sidewalks and plazas.

What is the dress code?

Casual. Please dress for the weather.

What is the expected weather?

Fall in Minnesota can be variable! Please check the forecast a few days in advance.

What happens if it’s raining?

We have indoor back-up locations to sketch in, if needed.
